" The instruction from Auto Europe to collect our Goldcar from Bergamo airport were very wrong. The details you provided me with were very misleading and inapporiate which resulted in a huge delay to collect the car and a number of trips back and forth from the collection point and the office in the airport. Doing this with a very young baby late in the day was very stressful and tiring. this made the experiece of renting through Auto Europe very bad. Staff at Goldcar also told us that this is a very common problem with Auto Europe and we were not the only customers with this issue. Dropping off the car was also very complicated and no clear instructions were given to us. Very dissappointed overall "

" After having reserved and PAID a car for 3 weeks, upon arrival to Catania (I had informed GoldCar about my late arrival, same day, but some hours after initial arrival time as the plane was rerouted ) I was told that the car was not anymore there. The 24/24 assistance line by AutoEurope was already not working at 20:00 announcing the offices were closed and I had to wait for the next day. GoldCar pretended that I had to rent another much more expensive car and I could eventually reclaim my payment from AutoEurope. (As a result we did a part of our Sicily tours by train and bus and rented sporadically cars where absolutely needed). After almost 4 weeks of complaints towards AutoEurope, no solution has been found, despite the written prove of early warning of late arrival, prove that I arrived at the time marked in the early warning. Apart from not getting a car, having lost a three weeks payment, investing a considerable time into complaints and having to put a lawyer on the issue, I never got excuses from GoldCar for the sexist insults by their employees. No, I definitely will not recommend GoldCar nor AutoEurope to anyone. "

I was, of course, upset that I had not been informed clearly about this - the only place I was able to find reference to this requirement was in the voucher document when I was asked to review it at the GoldCar desk in Bologna; i.e. even I wanted to know about this requirement, I could not because the voucher was e-mailed to me after I had paid for reservation to AutoEurope. So, I have no car. But, this is not where the story ends. I asked GoldCar to please return my money so I can go to another car company in the airport and try to find a car (by the way, no other company I spoke to that night - Hertz, Budget, Avis, Sixt, etc. - required a Internation Drivers Permit!). But, GoldCar staff said, "Sorry, we cannot refund you the money". I was outraged - you are not giving me the car, AND you are not giving me back the money!!?? Then, GoldCar placed a call to AutoEurope and AutoEurope representative confirmed that they, as well, would not refund money!! They/you simply refused without providing any reason. I have rented cars throughout europe (including in Italy), and have never been required to present an international drivers licence. As a result, I had to pay 350 euros on top of the 200 I had already paid to get comprehensive insurance. I have no idea how Goldcar's comprehensive insurance manages to get around this lack of an IDP. It seems a lot like price gouging. Obviously, this was an extremely unpleasant experience. We arrived in Bologna Italy to pick up our car and the clerks would not accept my husband's American Express card (the same card).
