What is the difference between a Motorhome, RV or Campervan?

Campervans are recreational vehicles normally smaller than motorhomes. A typical campervan is a compact vehicle offering 2-3 berths that provides both transport and sleeping accommodation. A campervan is a great solution for couples looking for a romantic getaway or two friends. In a typical campervan there is no division between the cab and the living area while amenities are basic. Campervans usually do not come with kitchen facilities or a full bathroom.

Motorhome denotes a larger vehicle which sleeps up to 8 people. Built on a truck or bus chassis, a typical motorhome often features a separate cab and living section. The kitchen and bathroom facilities are quite spacious with good equipment. A motorhome vehicle is the perfect solution for families or a group of friends.

RV stands for "recreational vehicle" and is a North American term used to describe motorised vehicles used for camping. The term is normally used to identify both motorhomes and campervans.

Medium motorhomes are usually equipped with a refrigerator, freezer, and a large three-flame cooker, which lends itself to preparing bigger family meals even when on the road.

Large motorhomes

This top-notch category comes with all the usual amenities but with much more room and elegance. The vast majority of them have sizeable storage for the luggage and supplies, so that you can spend significant time travelling through the countryside. Large motorhomes are ideal for a big family.

Be aware that you also need to pay extra for things like the gas bottle and transport from the airport but the prices are reasonable."

"The customer liason is great but the campervan was a little tired. Many parts were lacking maintenance. For instance the emergency repair kit for the tyre was not working when we had a puncture. We were told by the tyre supplier that the grading of the tyre was below the legal requirement. The ladder to go up to the bed had loose screws, the handle for one of the lockers also had a loose screw, the table kept coming off its rail. However in spite of all this mishaps the team had been available to help us at all times. Also I think that for the price of the rental certain things should be considered as standard. With other caravans that we rented bedsheets, pillows, covers and towels were included. After all the price is almost like going to a hotel. Apart from that we were very happy and the team were extremely helpful and very professional.."

"Booking with Auto Europe was simple and straightforward. Vehicle was nearly new and well appointed and we were invited to collected early. Given the very high cost the kitchen equipment was of very poor quality and sparse, towels/bedding and outside table and chairs not much better. Collection was fuss free and relatively quick, relying on instructions provided by email and information collected prior to collection. Hand over may seem a little rushed for some but may suite regular renters. The staff were attentive though there was some confusion over what we had pre-booked and Just Go are keen to up sell. Just Go make it very clear that there will be sever financial penalties for any minor infringement of their rules regarding the use and return of the vehicle, this can put a bit of a dampener on the holiday. Paying In advance for the refill service is probably good value and convenient if you can get the van back with empty diesel and gas tanks. The hired SatNav was a total waste of money as it was the most basic car TomTom, out of date, wouldn’t charge, did not have a motorhome setting and we had to constantly check against google maps. The MH developed a fault with the start/stop engine system on the second day. We contacted Just Go and an engineer returned our call promptly but they weren’t keen to correct the problem. Having to wait for the engine to go through it’s checks, and confirm it was the same fault and ok to drive every time we stopped was tedious and increased fuel consumption. No compensation was offered. For someone looking to try before buying it was a valuable experience though not quite the luxury one advertised."

We had a minor issue with the campervan but this was sorted quickly and the team rang to check that all was ok with us. "Very impressed with the quality of the vehicle and the service (pick up, hand over, drop off etc) that we received from Autocaravan Express. Some of the booking information could have been clearer but overall the whole process from booking to getting dropped off at the airport was very efficient and smooth. Would have no problem recommending and will certainly be using again. so much easier than the long drive from the north of England to Southern Spain."

"Everything was organized well and we really enjoyed our camper. The only negative thing we noticed is that the kitchenette was not complete, for example: it only had one sharp knife, no knifes to cut bread of meat and stuff. And there was no plate fur cutting vegetables etc. Also, the sheet to make up the mattress didn't have elastic bands, so after every night the sheets where loose and not covering the mattress."

"We were very pleased with McRent and service and personnel was great. However, we had to wait for 2.5 hours to get access to the motor home, and the gps we paid extra for was not updated, which was annoying and in the end meant extra miles and driving hours for us. But very fresh and clean motor home!"

"We had Some problems with our motorhome. The delivery at the start of our holiday took long and we were not good informed how much time it would take. We also had a problem with the pull down bed but McRent couldn’t send a technician and we had to solve it our self. We had damage to the motorhome that we also had to solve ourselves or drive back to Edinburgh or Glasgow which would have cost us a day. So the service given to us in these situation wasn’t good."

"The van was good, handover good (we'd never done this before), price very reasonable. But long way from Barcelona with complex/impossible public transport. Confusion over airport pickup - waited 2 hours but nobody turned up. McRent have no phone contact middle of day so no local help. Found best/cheapest way to actually make journey is to get train, then taxi so this could have been advised before trip. On return, Spanish BH - waited ages for someone (arranged)to turn up."

"It was our first ever motorhome trip. AutoEurope: Ok experience. It took some time to have IDs approved. Long telephone waiting times. McRent: Good experience, friendly staff and motorhome delivered in very good conditions. However 1. During the checkout (start if rental) they forgot to notice that one wheel rim was missing. At the check-in (end of contract) the missing rim was noticed immediately. Luckly we took some pictures during the check-out so we could avoid to pay the missing rim. 2. It took many weeks to have a refund for pre-paid highways tolls. We had paid a deposit for them, but McRent returned some money after a couple of weeks and reminder calls/mails. I never received an overview of the tolls and expenses calculation."

"The reception process of the camper was confusing and took too long Time. The employee tried to serve all customer at The same time and mixed up and forgot how far he was at each. He tried to tell us that we should return the camper 100% clean to avoid a fee. The camper was handed over in a dark garage where scratches were nearly impossible to see. First out in the sun they showed up, but then they were not registered in the handover paper which we signed in the garage. The return experience was much different and positive"

"The booking experience with Auto Europe felt a bit strange at first, with no immediate confirmation and then various stages of being invoiced. However, in the end everything worked out to our satisfaction, and next time we will know better how the procedure works. The rental company Road Bear provided a reliable RV and excellent service, no incident occurred over the 1,800-mile trip and we enjoyed a great vacation. We are actually thinking about another trip next year and will be happy to book again here."

"Difficult to say since we rented it in April and we are now in September but there was no negative point that I can recall. Not sure what is the difference between auto Europe and Maui though. The motorhome was in very good condition and we had no problems with it."
