    Car rental in Prague – Enjoy the Best of the Czech Republic

    Car rental in Prague

    Affectionately known as the City of a Hundred Spires, Prague ranks as one of Europe's best-preserved capitals. Nestling along the banks of the River Vltava, this cultural moscaic of a city is conveniently located right in the heart of the continent, making it easy to reach both by land and air. All the medieval splendour of its Old Town has been wonderfully preserved and today's visitors can wander aimlessly through central Prague's winding cobblestone lanes and alleyways whilst getting a distinct feel of how this unique place must have looked hundreds of years ago.

    The first port of call for most first-time travellers is the city's atmospheric Old Town Square - Prague's central showpiece - which is lined with the striking façades of many old buildings and dominated by the Town Hall's famous astronomical clock, which was first installed in 1410 and today ranks as the world's oldest timepiece of its kind still in operation. Other things to look for in the square include the Gothic Church of Our Lady (founded in the 14th century) and St Nicholas Church, which is considered by many experts to be an outstanding example of Baroque architecture right in the heart of the city centre.

    Proudly overlooking the capital stands Prague Castle, one of the most impressive city fortresses in central Europe and an unmissable attraction for visitors of all ages. The castle itself is part of a broader district comprising several other fascinating sites of great tourist interest, most notably the ancient St Vitus Cathedral (from which the city first evolved) and the Royal Palace which was the official residence of the Lords of Bohemia from the 11th to the 16th centuries.

    And no mater how many times you have been to Prague, you cannot leave the city without taking a leisurely stroll across the iconic Charles Bridge, one of Europe's most recognisable landmarks. Commissioned in 1357, it features no less than thirty-six Baroque saints lined up above its sixteen arches and many people claim that the view of the bridge from the east bank (encompassing a mélange of the Czech capital's richest architectural treasures) is one of the most striking photo opportunities in the whole of central Europe.

    With a car rental in Prague you can enjo the best of the city before embarking on a series of wonderful road-trips from the Czech capital, with several top-notch attractions located within a short driving distance of the city. The stunning Bohemian Switzerland National Park lies about 120 kilometres north and the journey takes two hours. Another favourite is a visit to the tiny town of Kutná Hora (famous for its 14th-century cathedral) situated some 80 kilometres east of the city.

    Frequently Asked Questions about Renting a Car in Rome

    Contact Us

    If you looking for detailed information about what kind of cover you will need for your affordable car hire in Prague or whether or not you will require a valid credit card to collect your vehicle, please click on the respective button below or call our rental specialists on +49 89 412 07 269;

    Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Prague?

    Yes. You will always need a credit card both to pay for your booking online and to pick up your car hire in Prague (please note that it MUST be in the name of the main driver listed on the voucher). The reason for this is that the local vehicle supplier will need to block a security deposit for the duration of the rental period, so the driver must therefore ensure that their card has a sufficient amount of credit to covers the amount blocked. To find out the amount in question, please click on the blue and white icon (i) after making a quick search in the Auto Europe booking engine. It's important to remember that if no credit card is presented at the time of collecting the car, the local supplier might well refuse to provide a vehicle or demand that the customer must pay for additional insurance (normally at a much higher cost) at the counter.

    What insurance do I need for my car rental in Prague?

    The good news is that when you hire a car in Prague with Auto Europe the rate of your rental already includes the minimum amount of legally-required coverage for your journey, comprising CDW (Collision Damage Waiver), third-party liability and theft protection. Nevertheless, should you wish to increase your car hire coverage, we offer a Fully Flexible Cancellation policy that protects you against any unforeseen circumstances during your trip.

    Please be aware that some local car hire employees might try to sell you additional insurance when you arrive to collect your vehicle. Many travellers feel pressured into buying such policies despite the fact that they have already purchased a sufficient amount of coverage for the duration of their rental period and are under no obligation to accept it. It's also important to check any age restrictions if you are a young driver or senior citizen hiring a car in Prague because each supplier has its own rules and regulations, meaning that a surcharge might be payable when you collect your vehicle. To check, please click on the blue and white info icon (i) for full details when making a search via the Auto Europe booking engine.

    How is the traffic in Prague?

    You'll find that the road system in and around the Czech capital is well designed when discovering the city and its environs with a car rental in Prague. Its two ring-roads - the MO (Inner Ring-road) and R1 (Outer Ring-road) link with most of the motorways and main roads that serve the city. Prague is accessible by motorway via 5 different directions which makes it much easier who choose to rent a car in Prague and pick it up downtown or at the airport. The main D1 motorway running south-east from Prague is the oldest highway in the Czech Republic and connects with many key destinations, including Brno (the country's second city) and Bratislava in neighbouring Slovakia. Be warned that there is a zero tolerance policy in place against people who drink and drive in the Czech Republic, so make sure you avoid taking to the road if you have consumed any alcohol at all. Please also note that seat-belt must be fastened at all times and drivers are expected to drive with their headlights on at all times. Local speed limits in the Czech Republic are standard, namely 50kph in the centre of Prague, 90kph oustide the city, 110kph on dual-carriageways and 130kph on motorways. Be careful with one-way streets when navigating in and around the Old Town and always give way to buses and trams. Kids weighing less than 36 kilograms (80lb) and under 150 cm (4ft 11in) in height must use a child seat and a safety belt.

    Where can I park my car rental in Prague?

    When exploring the city with a car hire in Prague, please note that some districts have limited parking possibilities, most notably the city centre which is mostly reserved for residents' vehicles (in blue zones). Nevertheless, some areas offer on-street metered parking and drivers can pay using apps, while some ticket machines still accept bank cards and coins. The best places to park are the orange zones where a maximum of two hours' parking is permitted between the hours of 8am and 6pm and green zones where you can leave your vehicle for up to six hours from 8am until 6pm. Several underground car parks such as Parking Palladium (Náměstí Republiky 1, Praha 1, 110 00, open 24/7 and one of the largest in the city) cater for visitors looking to leave their car in safe environmentfor a day or two whilst touring the main sights. Another popular alternative to parking in the heart of the city centre are Prague's Park & Ride car parks located a bit further out but offer quick and easy access to all the main tourist attractions.

    Yes. In fact, Prague is a popular place to rent a campervan and explore some of the beautiful towns and villages to be found in the heart of the Czech Republic. Nowadays more and more familes and groups of friends are taking to the road in their very own 'accommodation on wheels' to immerse themselves in the local scenery whilst savng money on hotels and restaurants.
