Frequently asked questions about renting a car in Belgium

At Auto Europe we believe in providing you with all the essential information needed to customise your reservation according to your preferences. To assist you, we’ve compiled answers to some of the most asked questions about booking a car hire in Belgium below. If after having read this, you still have a question or concern – please get in touch.

How old do I have to be to rent a car in Belgium?

To rent a car in Belgium, you’ll need to be at least 19 years old, as none of our current suppliers cater to drivers who are 18. While a few of our partners allow 19-year-olds to rent vehicles, the majority set the minimum age at 21 to 23. Additionally, if you’re under 26, please be aware that a young driver surcharge might apply and needs to be settled when you pick up the car.

Generally in Belgium many of the supplies do not impose a maximum age limit for renting a vehicle. Those that do, will impose a senior driver surcharge paid locally. It's always a good idea to review the terms of each supplier before placing your booking. You may also find our page dedicated to car rental age requirements useful as you make plans.

You'll need to provide your age when booking. This will show you any restrictions that might apply. To find out if there are any extra fees, just click the blue info icon (i) next to the individual offers displayed. You may also check your voucher after booking for this information.

Can I pick-up my car rental in Belgium in one place and drop it off in another?

Yes - we value your desire for a flexible car rental. That is why we allow you to customise your holiday just the way you want it. Through our domestic and international one-way rentals, we offer you the possibility easily pick-up your car in one Belgian city and return it in another. You can even rent a car in Belgium and drop it off in a different country altogether, like the Netherlands or France. Just keep in mind that some restrictions may apply based on the rental supplier, vehicle category and your chosen locations. Additionally, one-way rentals might impose a small daily charge for this privilege.

The one-way fee is already reflected in the prices displayed when you search for one-way car rental in our booking engine. The total rental price will show the breakdown, including how much of it is allocated for the one-way fee, as well as whether it needs to be paid online or at the counter. When planning an international one-way trip, keep in mind that while travel to most western European countries is generally permitted, additional restrictions may apply for eastern European countries. Therefore, if you plan to travel outside of Belgium, please inform us during the booking process on the form.

Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Belgium?

Yes - you will need a credit card to collect your vehicle. During pick-up the supplier will ask for a credit card in the name of the main driver. This card will be used to place a hold for a security deposit throughout your rental period. You can view the deposit amount for specific vehicles in our booking engine by clicking on the blue icon (i). It's important to ensure that the credit card has enough available balance. The deposit will be released back onto the card once it’s confirmed the vehicle has been returned in good condition. If you’re unable to provide a valid credit card, the car rental company may deny you the vehicle.

For certain luxury vehicles, you might need to show two or more credit cards when picking up the car. Most of our suppliers accept Visa, Mastercard, Diners and American Express. Still, we recommend checking the specific credit card policies for each supplier to confirm what is or isn’t accepted. You can easily do this after searching in our booking engine by clicking on the blue info icon (i). Additionally, the relevant details will be included in your voucher once the booking is completed.

What are the most important driving rules in Belgium?

In Belgium, just like in the rest of mainland Europe, vehicles drive on the right hand-side. Seat belts are compulsory for all passengers and any child under 1.35 meters needs to be secured in a child car seat. Belgium has rigorous laws regarding drink driving. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.5 grams per litre. Using your phone while driving is not allowed unless you're using a hands-free kit.

Drivers need to ensure they have a valid driver’s licence, the vehicle registration documents, proof of ID and insurance papers if stopped by police. The vehicle most also be equipped with a warning triangle, a first-aid kit, a fire extinguisher and a Hi-Viz jacket. Our Belgium driving guide offers additional useful tips on driving in the country.

Do I need to pay tolls when driving my car hire in Belgium?

No – generally there are no tolls on Belgium motorways for passenger vehicles. The only exception is the Liefkenshoektunnel located near Antwerp. This toll can be settled either in cash or by card.

What kind of insurance do I need for my car rental in Belgium?

When you rent a car in Belgium, rest assured that your vehicle comes with all the essential insurances required. This basic coverage includes Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), Theft Protection (TP) and liability coverage. However, please note that certain parts of the vehicle are typically not included in the standard insurance coverage, nor every eventuality.

We therefore recommend you look into enhancing your coverage for greater protection. The Full Damage Protection package is a package that not only covers parts of the vehicle that are typically excluded from the basic insurance, but also more unforeseen eventualities.

It's important to remember that car rental companies typically provide extra insurance options at the counter. However, this is entirely optional, and customers are not required to purchase it. Any locally purchased insurances will not be refunded even if deemed unnecessary afterwards. For more information, please take a look at our car rental coverage page. Further information can be found in your voucher or by clicking on the blue info icon (i) during booking.

Can I add an additional driver to my rental car in Belgium?

Yes - you can include extra drivers on your rental agreement for a nominal fee. We frequently have promotions that let you add additional drivers without any extra charge. You can check details regarding additional driver fees by clicking the blue info icon (i) during the booking. This information is also contained in your voucher once booking is confirmed.

Any extra drivers included in your booking must provide the same documents as the primary driver when collecting the vehicle. This includes ID and driving licence. Driving a rental vehicle without being named as an authorised driver on the rental agreement will completely nullify the insurance coverage. In this situation, the individual behind the wheel will be responsible for covering any expenses resulting from damage or theft.

Can I drive my car hire in low emission zones (LEZs) in Belgium?

Low Emission Zones have been established in Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent and the Wallonia region. Cameras monitor compliance at entry and exit points. If you rent a non-polluting vehicle that has a Belgian license plate, it will already be registered in the system, allowing you to drive freely within these low emission zones.

We recommend confirming with the car rental provider at the time of pick-up if you're renting a vehicle from another country like Germany or the Netherlands to make sure it is registered before you enter a Belgium low emission zone. Vehicles that do not comply will be fined. Any fine received will be forwarded to the renter via the supplier with an additional admin charge.
