What are the most important driving rules in Ireland?

In general, the road regulations in Ireland align closely with those observed in Britain. Vehicles are driven on the left side of the road, while overtaking occurs on the right. Mobile phones or other handheld devices, including tablets, while driving is expressly prohibited by Irish driving laws; hands-free setups are similarly disallowed. The wearing of seat belts is compulsory for both the driver and all passengers. Driving under the influence of alcohol is a grave offense - the limit is set at 0.05 mg/ml for regular drivers and 0.02 mg/ml for novice drivers with less than two years of experience.

Local speed limits are 50 km/h in urban areas (Central Dublin enforces a limit of 30 km/h), 80 km/h on rural roads, 100 km/h on national roads and dual-carriageways and 120 km/h on motorways. All infants under the age of three, as well as children aged three years and older who are less than 153cm tall are required to use a child car seat by law. Petrol stations are located throughout Ireland, particularly along the motorways and on main roads. You must always have ID and the vehicle documents with you, in case you may be asked to produce them if stopped routinely by police.

Do I need to pay tolls when driving my car hire in Ireland?

All base rental rates encompass the legally mandated amount of coverage for Ireland. These are limited liability insurance, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection (TP). Please be advised that CDW does not provide coverage to all aspects of the vehicle. We therefore highly recommend that drivers consider our Full Damage & Theft Protection product, available for an additional fee. This will cover other parts not covered with the basic coverage. Simply click on the blue information icon (i) located on the search results page for further details on insurance coverage.

It is common practice for local suppliers to offer their own insurance upon collecting your vehicle.
