To make the whole process of renting a car in Czechia faster and more seamless, we've prepared the following FAQs section in order to help you find all the essential information you need relating to a range of topics from car insurance, age restrictions, additional charges, border restrictions and winter equipment. The idea of this section is to provide you with lots of practical tips and suggestions for your trip whilst helping you find out more about driving in the Czech Republic.

How old do I have to be to rent a car in the Czech Republic?

You will need to be at least 19 years of age in order to be eligible to hire a car in the Czech Republic, notwithstanding the fact that the majority of local vehicle providers impose a minimum age limit of 21. Furthermore, you must have been in possession of a valid driving licence for at least a whole year prior to collecting your car. Another important consideration is that young drivers under the age of 25 may also be subject to what is known in the industry as a Young Driver Surcharge, the amount of which is paid locally to the car rental company (not in advance to Auto Europe) at the time of picking up the vehicle. To find out if this might affect your booking, just click on the blue and white info icon (i) where you'll find all the relevant details in the Driver Information section. Please also check out our age restrictions to find out what to do if you are a young driver.

As mentioned, all the rules and regulations relating to your car rental in the Czech Republic can easily be accessed on the Auto Europe website simply by making a very quick search in our high-tech booking engine. All you need to do is select your pick-up and drop-off point, car category and preferred supplier and we will do the rest by providing you with a list of suitable options from the cheapest downwards, after which you only need to click on the blue and white info icon (i) where you will find all the age-related information you need. It's important to remember that the same details will be sent to you in the Terms and Conditions attached to the booking voucher e-mailed to you once your booking has been confirmed. A word of advice for young drivers: please make sure you always submit your correct age when making a booking on the Auto Europe website, so that we'll be able to inform you of any restrictions and charges that might apply to your cheap car rental in the Czech Republic.

Can I pick-up my car rental in the Czech Republic in one place and drop it off in another?

Yes! Auto Europe offers both domestic and international one-way car rental options between selected locations subject to an additional fee. Usually subject to a minimum of at least a single day's rental, with us you'll be able to collect your vehicle in one place and drop it off somewhere else for all the freedom and flexibility you'll need to enjoy an extensive road-trip around the beautiful Czech Republic. You can quickly find out all you need to know about one-way fees (excluding VAT) and other related info in the search results after making a quick search through the Auto Europe booking engine. All you need to do is select your preferred pick-up and drop-off locations, vehicle category and supplier before clicking on the blue and white info icon (i) where details about any additional one-way fees will be clearly stated. The same info is also communicated in the Terms and Conditions of the booking voucher sent to you by e-mail once your reservation has been confirmed.

Another important aspect to take into account concerning one-way car rental fees is that the payment goes directly to the local supplier and not to Auto Europe, which means that we will not profit from that additional payment in any way whatsoever. However, we strongly feel that our customers need us to be fully transparent regarding such costs in order to make the best choice when booking their low-cost car hire in the Czech Republic. With that said, it's important to stress the fact that each respective vehicle supplier determines their own one-way fees independently of one another, hence the fee quoted for the same given pick-up and drop-off location by one company might vary significantly from another, while others may not allow the journey at all! The point being that each car provider operates in its own premises and rental location, thus enabling them to offer the customer different prices and options.

Cross-border travel is another important consideration for drivers looking to rent a car in the Czech Republic and enjoy an extensive road-trip to another destination, especially if they are planning to enter any of the Eastern European countries. Driving across the Czech border is permitted by many of the vehicle rental companies operating in the country, although the number of restricted countries of travel must be listed at time of booking. You can find out about these and all other travel restrictions simply by making a quick search in the Auto Europe booking engine by clicking on the blue and white info icon (i) where all the respective cross-border details can easily be found, with the same details e-mailed out to you with the car rental voucher once your reservation has been confirmed.

Do I need a credit card to rent a car in the Czech Republic?

Yes. To pick up your car rental in the Czech Republic, all drivers are required to present a major credit card (ie Visa, Mastercard, etc.) along with their passport, driving licence, booking voucher, car hire coverage details, etc. when they arrive at the supplier's welcome desk. The reason for this is that the vehicle provider will need to place a hold on the value of the deductible for the car they renting you foe the duration of the rental period. This amount is promptly refunded once the vehicle has been returned undamaged and in exactly the same condition it was in when it left the pick-up point. Some drivers express surprise when they present a debit card instead of a credit card and it is not accepted. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to make sure that you turn up at the car rental departure point with a valid credit card covered by enough credit for the deposit. Please note that when booking a premium- or luxury-category car, the supplier might well ask for a second credit card (also in the name of the main driver) due to the high value of such vehicles.

To find out how much the deposit will be (and which cards are acceptable), all you need to do is make a quick search through Auto Europe's high-tech booking engine by stating your preferred rental category and local supplier. After that, just click on the blue and white info icon (i) where you find all the details related to deposits and credit cards in the Mandatory Deposit Information and Supplier Payment Policy Information sections of the terms and conditions. Please note that when booking your car hire in the Czech Republic online, Auto Europe will require your credit card only as a payment methods for the pre-paid rental price. For an overview of the main things to look out for when planning to drive in Czech Republic, please take a look at our FAQ section on credit cards and deposits and/or call our award-winning rental specialists and they will be more than happy to answer any questions you might have and find you the best deal for your trip.

What are the most important driving rules in the Czech Republic?

There are several things to take into consideration when planning to drive your Auto Europe car hire in the Czech Republic. First of all, driving is done on the right-hand side of the road and the speed limit in built-up areas is 50kph, 80kph (on urban dual-carriageways), 90kph outside urban areas and 130kph on motorways. You'll find an abundance of petrol stations along main roads and motorways in and around the larger towns and cities, many of which are open 24/7. Since July 2006, all vehicles have been required to drive with their headlights on, which for newer cars means the driving lights and older cars normally means dipped headlights, which in both cases also requires the rear lights to be switched on.

The drink-drive limit for all drivers is a strict 0.00% meaning that the Czech Republic operates a zero-tolerance policy for drivers when it comes to drinking and driving. Please note that the police often carry out random tests and drivers must always submit to a test at their request, even if there are no grounds for suspicion. Bear in mind that seat-belts must be worn by everyone in the vehicle (when available) and children under 150cm tall must use an appropriate restraint or child seat when seated in either the front or back seats. Please be advised that small children are only allowed to be seated in a rear-facing restraint in the front passenger seat if the airbag is turned off. Needless to say, using a phone whilst driving in the Czech Republic is strictly forbidden and subject to a heavy fine. Please consult our dedicated information page to know what to do in case of suffering a breakdown or accident with your car hire in the Czech Republic.

Do I need to pay tolls when driving my car hire in the Czech Republic?

Yes. Divers in the Czech Republic ill find that there are tolls on most of its motorways which are paid through an electronic vignette system, meaning drivers need to purchase a digital sticker to use these roads. All vehicles up to and including 3.5 tons are legally required to have a vignette in the Czech Republic on all roads that are identified with appropriate road signs. For travellers looking to avoid paying tolls, certain sections of the road that are free to travel on are identified by a sign with the lettering BEZ POPLATKU or more simply by a crossed-out vignette. For more specific details regarding tolls in the Czech Republic, please visit the Tolls website to check the toll information on toll roads and their respective payment policies.

What kind of insurance do I need for my car hire in the Czech Republic?

One of the main advantages of booking your next car rental in the Czech Republic with Auto Europe is that all the rates quoted on our website include the minimum amount of legally-required insurance comprising CDW (Collision Damage Waiver, with or without excess depending on the car rental company) and Theft Protection (TP), also with or without excess. Please note that certain parts of the vehicle such as the engine, roof, etc. are not covered by the basic rate, which is why the majority of our customers choose to pay a little extra for Auto Europe’s excellent Full Damage Protection product which offers travellers total peace of mind whilst driving around Prague and other popular destinations in Czechia.

It couldn't be easier to find out exactly what coverage is included in the basic car hire rate. All you need to do is cick on the blue and white info icon (i) after making a quick search through the Auto Europe booking engine, after which you'll find all the relevant details in the Standard Package Rate and Additional Information sections in the pop-up Terms and Conditions. Please be aware that when you arrive to collect your rental car in the Czech Republic, the local vehicle supplier might try to offer you additional coverage such as (but not restricted to) PAI (Personal Accident Insurance), PEC (Personal Effects Coverage), Super CDW, Seguro Relax Insurance, Road Assistance etc. It's worth bearing in mind that Auto Europe cannot refund the amount of any locally-purchased coverage (or any other products), even if it is found to be surplus to the driver's requirements after the rental period is finished. Please follow the link to our dedicated car rental coverage page for more tips and advice on this very important topic.

Can I add an additional driver to my rental car in the Czech Republic?

Yes! It is quick and easy to add another driver to your rental contract when booking a car hire in the Czech Republic. It's worth noting that some local vehicle providers choose to include the fees in the final price while others prefer to charge customers a daily fee when they arrive to collect their car, the amount of which is always established by each respective car hire company and not Auto Europe. Whichever the case, additional drivers need to be officially registered on the rental agreement, plus they will need to present exactly the same documents as the main driver at the time of pick-up (ie their driving licence, International Driving Permit (IDP) where required and passport). It should be noted that you can save cash by taking advantage of Auto Europe's popular Auto Europe Free Additional Driver offers, meaning that you can have a second driver added to your booking completely free of charge when confirming your reservation through our website.

Once again, all the relevant information relating to any fees being incurred for adding another driver to the rental contract are clearly stated on our website. All you need to do is make a quick search in our booking engine and click on the blue and white info icon (i) next to the price of your chosen vehicle, after which you only need to scroll down to the Driver Information section to find out the Additional Driver Fee. The same details are always included on the car rental voucher sent out to customers by e-mail once their reservation has been confirmed. Importantly, if a friend or family member not included in the car hire contract decides to drive the vehicle at any time during the rental period, they will be totally excluded from the terms and conditions of the insurance coverage and, therefore, become completely liable for the total amount of any damages caused in the event of a collision or theft. That is why it is extremely important to make sure that all additional drivers are properly authorised beforehand in order to drive prior to departing from the collection point in the Czech Republic.
