    Car hire in Rome

With its bustling piazzas, centuries-old fountains and vibrant street life, Rome is one of the most fascinating capital cities. Rome brings ancient Europe to life like no other place on the continent. Some of the world's greatest museums and art galleries are to be found here, and visitors to the Colosseum, Forum (with its stunning basilicas and temples) and Pantheon can get a true sense of the city's unique history that made Italy so great two thousand years ago. Few cities have so many historic sites both in the centre and in the outlying areas, such as the Roman villa of Hadrian in Tivoli, while the Vatican City is a major attraction for first-time visitors at any time of the year.

Due to its convenient location right in the middle of Italy, this magnificent city is an excellent choice for travellers looking to enjoy a fun-filled road-trip with friends and family members. With an affordable car rental in Rome the options are endless, especially for visitors looking to soak up some of the history and culture found in abundance in this part of the country. Heading south takes you down the coast to Naples, a wonderful place to visit with lots of culinary appeal plus the added attractions of Pompeii and the breathtaking Amalfi Drive close by. Other options include a trip along the E35 autostrada to the beautiful Renaissance city of Florence and the delightful hill towns of Tuscany.

    Rome Train Stations

Conveniently located in the heart of Rome's city centre, the busy Rome Termini Train Station is one of the largest railway stations in Europe, second only to Gare du Nord in Paris. The station handles regular connections to major and from some of Italy's biggest cities such as Pisa and Milan, along with daily connections to other countries across Europe. The offices of most of the car hire companies serving the station can be found on Via Giovanni Giolitti, the avenue that runs alongside the station.

Situated in the north-east of the city, you can also pick up your car rental at Rome Tiburtina Train Station, which is much closer to Rome's main ring-road (the Grane Raccordo Anulare) than Termini Train Station and therefore a more convenient option for some travellers. Here you can pick up and drop off your hire car next to the station building as many of the vehicle suppliers are located on Circonvallazione Tiburtina, Circonvallazione Nomentana and Via Tiburtina which are close to the station entrance.

Frequently Asked Questions about Renting a Car in Rome

The following section is dedicated to travellers looking for information about different aspects relating to their car hire requirements, such as what coverage is necessary in Italy and whether or not a credit card is essential to hire a car in Rome. We also provide information on what the traffic might be like in Rome and whether drivers will be required to pay any tolls during their trip, etc. If you feel you need more information or your question isn't addressed below, our phone specialists are just a call away and always happy to help!

Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Rome?

Yes. You will always need a valid major credit card (ie Visa, Mastercard, Diners, etc.) in order to collect your car rental in Rome. The reason for this is the fact that the local vehicle supplier will need your credit card as a security deposit for the duration of the rental period, which is why it is essential that your card's credit limit more than covers the amount of the security deposit. It's quick and easy on the Auto Europe website to find out the exact amount of the security deposit for any car deal offered through our booking engine. All you need to do is click on the blue and white info (i) button, after which you will find all the credit card information. Please note that if no credit card is presented to the car rental staff at the time of pick-up, they may refuse to give you the vehicle or require you to pay for additional insurance over the counter.

What insurance do I need for my car rental in Rome?

Auto Europe's prices always include the minimum amount of legally-required coverage whenever you make a search through our booking engine. If you wish to increase your level of protection, Auto Europe offers an excellent policy for a few extra euros called Full Damage Protection which provides additional peace of mind when travelling around Rome and the rest of Italy. It's easy to find out exactly what is included in the rate; all you need to do is click on the blue and white info (i) button next to the price advertised on our site after making a quick search, after which you'll find all the necessary coverage details and in the Standard Package Rate and Additional Information sections. Nevertheless, regardless of the coverage you purchase with Auto Europe, you will probably be offered more insurance options when you arrive to collect car hire in Rome, which you don't have to buy because you are already fully covered by Auto Europe. Please consult our dedicated car rental coverage page for more tips and useful advice.

How is the traffic in Rome?

Due to its heavy rush-hour traffic, driving your car rental in Rome will be a similar experience to driving in most other European capitals. It's always a good idea to plan your route meticulously in advance depending on where you are planning to go and which attractions you are planning to visit. Rome is surrounded by a large ring road - the Grande Raccordo Anulare (or GRA) which offers drivers the chance to avoid the congestion of the city centre whenever possible because traffic on the GRA tends to move more quickly. The city is also very well connected to many of the main roads and motorways that cover the length and breadth of Italy, including the A1/E35 running northbound (meaning that Florence is only a 3-hour drive away), while Naples can be reached on the A1/E45 in just two and a half hours.

Where can I park my car rental in Rome?

As expected, parking within Rome’s city centre is very difficult and can be costly. We would recommend parking in one of its surrounding suburbs and heading into the centre via the local public transport. With much of the centre of Rome being a Limited Traffic Zone, parking can be even more difficult. We recommend catching the metro which effortlessly and quickly takes you to many of the city’s tourist attractions. The Collosseum, Spanish Steps, Fontana di Trevi and Vatican, can all be reached from Metro Line A. Another great option to consider is parking your vehicle in one of the secure car parks near Furio Camillo or Manzoni. The proximity of both car parks to the Metro system is ideal. If you decide to park your vehicle on the street, then avoid Limited Traffic Zones - these are for residents only - and instead look for a parking bay marked with a blue line. Despite the city's size and the number of cars passing through every day, there several good options for parking your car rental in Rome. Street parking in Rome is colour-coded with lines indicating which vehicles are allowed to park. White lines indicate free parking and these spaces are rarely free but it's always worth looking just in case. Many white parking spaces can be found near hospitals (Bambino Gesú, Nuovo Regina Margherita, Oftalmico, Policlinico, Santo Spirito and S. Giovanni-Addolorata) and in the main residential areas of the city. Yellow parking zones are reserved for disabled drivers with the appropriate permit while pink areas are reserved for pregnant women and parents with newborn children. Of most important to travellers visiting Rome are the blue zones which indicate paid parking, with payment made in cash or by credit card at the parking meters located close by on the pavements, with no payment required on Sundays and public holidays (never leave any valuables inside the car). There are several more expensive options, such as underground and multi-storey car parks, which are located all over the city, including near popular landmarks and tourist attractions such as the Colosseum and the Vatican.

Can I drive my car rental in the ZTL-zone in Rome

Not generally, but there are some exceptions when the ZTL is not active like on Sundays and public holidays. ZTLs (which means Zonas a Traffico Limitato in Italian) were introduced as a way of limiting air pollution and people visiting with a low-cost car rental in Rome can obtain the most up-to-date daily information on the city's ZTL system by checking the romamobilita.it website or looking at the electronic displays at the entrance point to each respective ZTL. It's worth noting that most of Rome's historic centre is part of a ZTL and only residents with a special pass or people with properly identified cars can drive in these areas whilst the ZTL period is active (note that there are cameras strategically placed to identify and punish violators).

Can I hire a motorhome in Rome?

Yes, of course! In addition to offering a wide range of services for an affordable car rental in Rome, Auto Europe also prides itself on its strong partnerships with several motorhome suppliers in Rome in order to provide our customers with the best selection at the most competitive prices. With your very own hotel room on wheels you'll be able to enjoy the best of this magnificent city before heading off down the coast to visit Naples and Pompeii, for instance.
