Frankfurt-Hahn Airport is located in Hahn itself, around 10 km from Kirchberg in the Rhineland-Palatinate area. This is the second, and a smaller airport that serves Frankfurt. Originally a US air base, in 1993 it became a civilian airport. Due to its location passengers can quickly reach Mainz, Cologne, Koblenz, Trier and Luxembourg. As a smaller airport, it attracts many low-cost carriers, including Ryanair, Wizz Air, Air Arabia Maroc and more. These generally link the region to Spain, Italy, Portugal, Morocco and so forth.
Locally, Frankfurt city is the largest in the area and a commercial, and financial powerhouse. With a bustling historic centre, modern skyscrapers and plenty of restaurants, bars and tourist attractions to enjoy. With a car rental from Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, you can furthermore uncover much of the surrounding area - from Cologne to Düsseldorf, and Dortmund to Heidelberg, with a one-way car rental you can collect your vehicle in one place and drop it off in another. Not forgetting that the French, Belgium and Luxembourg borders are also close by and great to explore.

In 1993 the airport became a civilian airport from its former US air base status. This is a small airport, but its location is ideal for those wishing to visit Frankfurt and the region. This airport is one of only two that serves Frankfurt, with the other being Frankfurt Main Airport. Frankfurt-Hahn Airport operates 24-hours per day, which has attracted numerous low-cost airlines. Despite handling around 1.5 million annual passengers, its numbers have declined in recent years. Nevertheless, Frankfurt-Hahn Airport is a perfect gateway to this part of Germany.

If you opt for a car rental at Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, getting to central Frankfurt is very simple via a rural but well-maintained road. It will take you around one hour and a half, covering 125 kms. Due to its rural setting there is less traffic on the road. The quickest way is by driving along the B50 - from Autobahn exit 45, via A61. This follows the west bank of the river Rhine - Mainz to Koblenz. In just over an hour you can also drive to Mainz, Wiesbaden, Koblenz and Trier. The city of Luxembourg and Metz will take just over two hours to reach by car. You can also catch a bus or taxi from the terminal.
Frankfurt-Hahn Airport has some parking options. P1 is a covered car park that is located right next to the terminal used for short-stay parking. P2 and P3 car parks are used for long-stay parking. Car rental vehicles are located in the car park area, and a member of staff should guide you to them. When driving in the city of Frankfurt, you must have a low-emissions sticker to enter such zones. Rental cars normally come with these, but you should check beforehand. Parking in the city itself is costly and hard to find. We would recommend opting for a parking garage. These are more cost-effective, secure and often very conveniently located. We would recommend using the Park-&-Ride scheme available, in which you can park outside Frankfurt and catch public transport into town.
