The history of Porto Airport dates right back to the 1940s when the original airstrip was built. It was later named after the locally-born Portuguese prime minister, Francisco Sá Carneiro, who died in an air crash in 1980. The airport has been subject to expansion work and a series of improvements in line with Porto's recent development as a tourist destination, being mostly popular with Europeans arriving on short-haul flights.

Porto Airport (OPO) features a recently rebuilt and fully expanded passenger terminal, one of the best and most multifunctional in Portugal that operates a large number of both domestic and international flights every day of the week. In its spacious main hall, travellers are offered an extensive range of shops and support amenities, as well as numerous check-in counters, security areas, departure lounges, modern baggage-reclaim services and a large Arrivals Hall close to which many of the main car rental operators are located. This stylish terminal was also designed to meet the needs of disabled passengers with the highest European standards of design and accessibility available to them, including ramps, special lifts and toilet facilities. Information desks are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with a number of them scattered throughout the terminal building to help travellers requiring help getting to and from the city centre, booking accommodation, etc.
This airport offers a wide variety of 21st.century conveniences to make the visiting experience and onward journey of its many passengers as comfortable as possible. From coffee shops to restaurants and bars, banks, bureaux de change and baby/changing areas for families with small children and much more, the airport most notably the main terminal) has everything travellers will ever need within a short walking distance. Many shops selling a vast assortment of items are available whenever flights are arriving and departing, selling such products as mobile phone, books, magazines, clothing and duty free goods. Wi-fi access is free and available throughout the terminal to provide flight info and more details about the airport itself.
The airport is perfectly located to serve the city of Porto and its surrounding areas, including the Douro Valley (home to port wine) and the enchanting Minho region. Its proximity to the city centre also allows for a wide choice of public transport options, although a growing number of visitors are choosing to book a car hire at Porto Airport and explore the city and its environs in total comfort and at their own pace, especially when travelling with friends or family members. In any case, the quickest way to get to the city centre by public transport is by metro, whose system has five colour-coded lines, including the purple line which connects to the airport. Outside the passenger terminal building, travellers also have access to the local bus service and a taxi rank which are more expensive but much more direct. Hotel shuttle services and private buses routes are also available and an excellent choice for people making their way to Porto city centre.
Parking your car rental at Porto Airport certainly isn't a problem because as there are several affordable options available in short-stay to long-stay car parks, with a couple of possibilities in between. When visiting the city centre, the best advise is to park your vehicle in one of the car parks on the metro line (purple) and continue your journey by public transport. There are dozens of sizeable car parks along the various metro lines offering good rates for long stays if required. Parking within Porto's inner city boundary itself can be tricky which is why, if you are planning to visit the Old Town, Ribeira and other historic parts of the city, we recommend the metro as your first option. However, if you want to visit the outskirts of the city and the surrounding areas, the Douro wine region and the nearby towns, a low-cost car hire at Porto Airport is the ideal option as it gives you the chance to see and do as much as possible in a relatively short time.
