One of the world's oldest (and greatest) cities, Naples is a place bursting with ancient history, making it a pleasure to explore at any time of the year. Offering travellers a taste of the real Italy, its churches and museums are packed with an abundance of riches and visitors walking around its many palm-fringed piazzas will find enticing street markets where vendors go about the time-honoured tradition of their daily business with grace and Neapolitan determination.
There's so much one simply cannot miss, most notably the amazing National Archaeological Museum (Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli) which houses a vast collection of treasures unearthed at nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum, including some of the best-preserved ancient frescoes, mosaics and statues in existence. Other top tourist attractions include Castel Ovo on the waterfront and the 13th-century Naples Cathedral, while right underneath the city lie the Catacombs of San Gennaro, a maze of passages and tomb chambers dating back to the second-century AD.
Just beyond the city lies the dazzling Mediterranean land and seascapes of its long sandy coastline, a region crying out to be explored with a car rental in Naples. With its stunning seascapes and sweeping vistas, a drive along the Amalfi Coast is one of the great road-trips of Europe and a must for visitors opting to explore the area with their own transport. Dominating the shoreline south of the city, Mount Vesuvius is the only active volcano on the European mainland and a hike to the top is rewarded by breathtaking views of Naples and its spectacular coastline.
The haunting, evocative Roman city of Pompeii is another firm favourite for tourists discovering this unique part of Italy. Preserved for posterity by layers of volcanic ash during the 79 AD eurption of nearby Vesuvius, it reveals more about the daily life of the Romans than any other place on the planet, an experience further enhanced by Herculaneum and the Temples of Paestum close by. After all that, why not enjoy a short ferry ride to the beautiful island of Capri where understated luxury and some of Italy's finest beaches await. Naples is also well located for people looking to discover destinations in the south of Italy, such as the ancient port city of Bari.

Need more info about car rental coverage? What about credit cards? Are you wondering about the traffic in Naples? We have the answers to all your questions in our FAQ section below.
Yes, you will need a credit card both to pay for your booking online and pick up your car rental in Naples when you arrive at the pick-up point. Please be aware that no matter which credit card you used to actually pay for your reservation on the Auto Europe website, the credit card you use to collect your vehicle must be in the name of the main driver as stated on the voucher. The reason why credit cards are so important when renting a car in Naples is because the local provider will need to use it to block a security deposit for the duration of your rental period (please make sure that your card has a high enough credit limit to cover the amount). You can find out the exact amount of the security deposit by clicking on the blue and white info (i) button after making a quick search through the Auto Europe booking engine. Please note that if you don't have a credit card in the amin driver's name, the local car rental company has the right to refuse the booking and/or demand that the customers pays for additional insurance at the counter.
Travellers who rent a car in Naples with Auto Europe will be happy to discover that our prices always include the minimum amount of legally-required coverage, including Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), third-party liability and theft protection. However, the amount of excess varies according to which supplier you have selected and the category of vehicle chosen, the details of which can be found by clicking on the blue and white info (i) button in the car details. For extra peace of mind, many drivers are prepared to pay a little extra for Auto Europe's Car Rental Full Damage Protection or Car Rental Full Damage Protection with Breakdown Cover policies which can easily be added with a single click of the mouse during the booking process. Please check out our Car Rental Coverage page for more details. Please also note that certain age restrictions might apply to both younger and senior drivers, which might include the payment of an additional surcharge.
Regardless of any coverage purchased at the time of booking, some customers report the 'hard sell' of additional insurance options when they arrive to collect their vehicle. Please be aware that you are under no obligation to buy these products and rest assured that the coverage you have already purchased from Auto Europe is more than enough to protect you and your car through the duration of your car hire in Naples.
Naples is well connected through a network of motorways making access to the centre and the city's surrounding areas quick and easy by car. The A1 (also known as the E45) links directly with the capital, Rome, while the Tangenziale di Napoli (A56) is the best way to reach Naples Airport. Generally speaking, the roads in Naples are in quite good condition but can be a bit narrow and therefore more congested in the older parts of the city. Please note that large parts of the centre of Naples (most notably the Centro Storico, or historic center) now has restricted access due to it being a ZTL - Zona Traffico Limitato (Limited Traffic Zone), as well as other parts of the city's downtown area, including Mezzocannone and Piazza del Gesù.
Street parking is managed through a city-wide colour-code system, namely white spaces for free parking, blue for paid parking and yellow for disabled parking. Car parks (both underground and multi-storey) are numerous and generally the closer you are to the city centre the more you pay. Local transport operator ANM (Azienda Napoletana Mobilità SPA) manages many of the best car parks in Naples, some of which are in privileged locations and ideal for visitors looking to visit the top city attractions. It's also possible to park your car rental in Naples in car parks situated close metro, tram and bus stops and use the excellent public transport system to explore Naples. Note that there are good parking options at Piazza Garibaldi (next to Naples Train Station) and under Maschio Angioino in Piazza Municipio, both of which cost a little more but are great for tourists discovering the city. Furthermore, Naples Airport just a few kilometres away from the city centre has several car parks available for short- and long-term stays at various prices.
No, not without a special permit. Naples restricted area (ZTL Naples) is divided into several different areas which are camera-enforced with a fine payable, including Tarsia-Pignasecca-Dante; Centro Antico; Belledonne-Martiri-Poerio; Morelli-Filangieri-Mille; Chiaia and Via Padre Gaetano Errico), all of which have different access rules and timetables. Some are restricted 24/7 and others for certain periods of the day. Hotel guests can enter in Naples ZTL for loading and unloading luggage (it is the responsibility of hotel staff to inform the local police of your car registration number). Look out for the white ZTL sign which has a big red circle. For more specific information, please go to the Naples ZTLs page.
Besides offering the right car rental in Naples and always at the right price, Auto Europe also offers modern campervans and motorhomes for hire in Naples and other parts of Italy. Why not explore the city and its surrounding areas with your very own hotel room on wheels with family and friends at any time of the year!
