Opened in 1862, Malaga Train Station was originally conceived for transporting coal from Val de Córdoba to the port terminus in Malaga. From 2005 to 2007 the train station was completely rebuilt and repurposed into a passenger transport hub for the region. The official name became Maria Zambrano Train Station - in honour of the native philosopher. To date, there are eleven railway tracks and seven platforms. Along with commuter trains, national high-speed trains operate out of this station across Spain - to Barcelona, Madrid, Córdoba, Seville and Valencia, to name but a few.
Malaga Train Station is well located in the city itself and close to the port. This means that many customers opt for a car rental at Malaga Train Station as a preferred option to hiring at Malage Airport. Its popularity means that many local, national and international car rental supplies have their counters at the train station. Suppliers can be found both inside the main terminal and just outside the terminal building.
Before arriving to collect your car rental, make sure you have ready your driving licence, identification and the car rental voucher. A credit card under the main driver's name must also be supplied for a security deposit. Only physical cards are accepted - no digital versions. Please consult with your home consulate to ascertain whether or not an international driving permit is required. The following are just some trusted suppliers at location for your to choose from.

The terminal itself has everything you would expect for a safe and secure onward train journey. A luggage storage facility is provided from 07:00 until 23:00 daily. A travel agency, tourist information desk, a pharmacy, ATM machines and a VIP lounge. The Barceló Hotel is attached to the centre, including a 10-screen cinema. For children, there is a playground for kids up to 12-years old. Car rental desks are also present within the terminal - ideal for when you opt for a car rental at Malaga Train Station.
Due to its location, Malaga Train Station is easily accessible via car and other public transport. For those wishing to explore Malaga itself, renting a car at Malaga Train Station is a great option. To reach the train station by car, simply follow the N-340 to Calle Explanada de la Estación. Otherwise, catch a bus, train, metro or tram to the station instead. The closest metro station is El Perchel - here both blue and red lines interchange.
If catching a bus, then look for bus number 1, 3, 10, 16, 19,24, 27 and C2 - all of which stop at Malaga Train Station. C-1 connects this train station to Malaga Airport (T3) via the Malaga-Alameda route. Trains run every 30-minutes and you can expect your journey time to be around 12-minutes. Malaga has a well-maintained and well-connected road network, with motorways along the Costa del Sol towards Gibraltar, via Marbella, Estepona, Sotogrande and La Linea.
It isn’t difficult to park at Malaga Train Station due to ample car parking garages. The shopping centre alone has over 1,500 parking spaces spread over two floors. With 2-hours free parking, and daily tickets from 6€, the choice is simple. This car park is open 24-hours per day, providing secure parking places for those shopping and catching a train. For the 2-hour free parking, you will have to validate your ticket on -1 at the customer service desk. Those visiting the cinema, will have up to 3-hours free parking - simply validate your ticket at the box office.
Another alternative is a 7-minute walk from the train station. Managed by SABA parking, this secure car park is located at the Malaga Plaza Shopping Centre. If you’re willing to walk a little further, then the Calle Refino car parking garage could be another option for parking your car rental at Malaga Train Station. On-street parking in Malaga is seldom available and can also be costly, with restrictions. Parking is within blue-bays with a ticket machine close by. Generally, paid parking is between 09:00 to 14:00, and 17:00 to 20:00 weekdays. We recommend checking the parking restrictions nearby to confirm as some areas might be slightly different. If you plan to visit Malaga’s old town, we advise parking your car in a car park instead as this is more secure.
