    Airport Information

London City Airport is located in the Royal Docks, East London and primarily serves business travellers, private jets and small scale commercial flights. The airport was established in 1992, but it wasn’t until 1994 that it officially started to host passengers. Due to its central location, and great public transport links, this airport attracts mainly business users. It is 10kms from the city of London square mile, and even closer to the Isle of Dogs (Canary Wharf) financial hub.

Engineering firm Mowlem developed this airport in the eighties, and in 2016 it was purchased by Alberta Investment Management Corporation who are based in Canada. In 2019 the airport welcomed more than 5 million passengers, becoming the fifth busiest airport in the city, behind London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Stansted, and Luton. It currently has a 1,508 meter runway and also acts as a training centre for pilots. The Irish regional airline - CityJet has set-up its hub here.

    Terminals

Due to its location at the Royal Docks, this airport has limited space to operate and expand into. It currently has one, two-storey terminal with eighteen boarding gates, it also has one runway. The airport welcomes in very few daily passengers, but it is extremely well connected via the Docklands Light Rail network (DLR). The terminal has all the main services and amenities for a safe and secure onward flight. Departure is located on the first-floor of the terminal.

    Airport Facilities

Despite its relatively small size, London City Airport offers ample facilities to its guests. Along with check-in desks, security check areas, departure hall, arrival hall, luggage reclaim belts and a restauration area - visitors also have ATM machines, Travelex currency exchange and a post box. Numerous shops are available throughout the terminal and past security - a newsagent, bookstore and a duty-free store - to name but a few. Visitors can further indulge themselves at numerous eateries, restaurants and coffee houses, which are located throughout the terminal - Prêt à Manger, Cafe Nero for example. Wi-Fi is available free-of-charge.

How to get to and from London City Airport

Reaching London City Airport is simple due to its excellent road connections and transport links. With your car rental at London City Airport you can reach the airport in the Royal Docks via the A406 dual-carriageway. From the south you can cross via Blackwall Tunnel and from the east you can reach the airport via the M11 and A13. Buses provide an additional way to get to and from the airport. The 473 bus will take you to the Prince Regent DLR station via Stratford, Silvertown and North Woolwich. Bus 474 will take you towards Canning Town, North Woolwich and East Beckton via Silverton. Furthermore, there is a free shuttle service 573, that provides a circular journey between London City Airport via Albert Road, Woolwich Ferry, Woolwich Manor Way, Prince Regent.

The Docklands Light Rail (DLR) is an exceptional driverless train that will take you from the airport to Bank Station in the city of London. Other routes also exist to Lewisham, Woolwich Arsenal, Beckton, Stratford and Tower Gateway. DLR operates every 5 to 10 minutes and links to various underground stations and overground services. Stratford also hosts the international Eurostar service to the continent. A taxi rank is available outside the airport terminal. Mini cabs and Uber can also be pre-ordered.

    Parking tips

Due to space, parking at the airport is limited. A long-stay car park exists but is costly at £45 per day. This car park is around 7-minutes walk from the terminal building. Discounts are available for those that book in advance. A set-down, pick-up area is located outside the terminal which literally only allows for very short stops.

In London itself, parking is harder to obtain the more central you are. Many areas operate parking restrictions and on-street parking can be costly. Generally on-street parking only allows you to stay for a maximum of two-hours. Pay-&-Display or pay metres are located adjacent to the roads. Numerous car park garages are present across the city. These are often secure and more cost-effective. Free on-street parking can be found the further out of central London you go. For example, in Newham, Clapham, Islignton, etc. A daily congestion charge for those entering the city exists, as does an emissions zone.
