    Terminals

Covering a total area of 16 square-kilometres (6.2 square-miles), Fiumicino Airport was inaugurated in 1961 with two runways initially as a complement to Rome Ciampino Airport, Rome's other air transportation hub. Today the airport currently has two large terminals: Terminal 1 (Gates A1–A83) is the home base to the national carrier ITA Airways and Terminal 3 (Gates E1–E52) is the largest terminal which also incorporates the former Terminal 5 as well as the satellite building for non-Schengen departures. A new central airside hall has been built as its middle part in recent years. Future plans include a new Terminal 4, expansion of runways, and new buildings for car parking, services, and airport facilities.

    Airport Facilities

Recently modernised, Fiumicino Airport has all the necessary facilities for the large number of passengers passing through each year. It is generally considered an airport of excellence by travellers from all over the world, particularly in the European Union. The airport has an extensive range of passenger services, including information points, self-service kiosks, unlimited Wi-Fi, luggage-wrapping service, banks, post offices, bureaux de change and ATMs throughout the terminal building. As in all major airports, there is a large catering area with restaurants, cafés and bars, as well as shops selling the most prestigious Italian brands and Duty-Free shops. The shopping area at Fiumicino Airport is particularly impressive and provides passengers with a truly unique and diverse shopping experience, transforming the wait for their flight into an enjoyable moment packed with opportunities. There's a rich assortment of shops and stylish boutiques offering a wide range of goods all conveniently located in one upmarket and very exclusive precinct. The dining area is equally impressive with a gastronomic space offering travellers a culinary journey even before they board their flight. How to get to and from Rome Fiumicino Airport

Once you've collected your car rental at Rome Fiumicino Airport, it's relatively easy to get from the terminal to the city centre and back. Simply take the Grande Raccordo Anulare and continue along the A91 motorway, whereas when you get to the airport all you need to do is follow the signs to Departures. If you're coming from Civitavecchia, head towards Rome on the A12/E80 motorway and after reaching the toll booths just follow the signs to the airport. The airport is served by a number of bus companies, such as Cotral, SIT Bus Shuttle, TAM Srl and Terravision and Atral-Schiaffini, all of which which run every 30 minutes or more frequently. Cotral's first stop is the main international terminal and runs to Piazzi del Cinquecento, passing through various parts of the city and several train and metro stations en route. Trenitalia is the train service company and offers frequent connections to and from the centre of Rome, with departures every 15 minutes or so. Regional trains on the FL1 line leave for a number of stations in Rome, including Tiburtina Station which connects with the TGV services that link Rome with other major Italian cities such as Venice, Padua, Genoa, Bologna and Florence. At the main taxi outside the Arrivals Hall, look out for the official taxis identified by their white colour with the driver's licence identification number displayed on the doors.

    Parking Tips

Parking in Rome can be easier than parking in many other big cities if you do your home-work. The first thing to remember is to avoid the historic centre at all costs, meaning that it's best to park outside the Old Town and use public transport to get around. The historic centre is also a ZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato) which means that it is off limits to private cars unless your hotel happens to be in that location. Pay close attention to street signs because local parking regulations vary according to each respective area. You can pay for parking at a parking meter with cash or coins, plus you can still use the 'scratch and paper' method at some kiosks. You can park your affordable car hire at Fiumicino Airport in comfort and total safety. There's plenty of short-term parking possibilities available at Rome Fiumicino Airport (almost 5,000 spaces in total), as well as long-term in car parks close to the main terminal linked by a complementary shuttle. For an extra charge, you might want to consider the excellent Executive Car Park from which it's a short walk to the Arrivals and Departures Halls.
