The history of the airport dates back to 1929 when the planning phase commenced, with construction being completed on the 1st of March 1937. One of the largest in Europe at that time, its large, ultra-modern terminal was used as model for other airports as the aviation industry began to expand all over Europe. Prague Airport welcomed its inaugural flight on the 5th of April 1937, a Douglas DC-2 that connected Piešťany, Zlín, Brno and the Czech capital. The first international route linked Vienna, Prague and Berlin around the same time. In 2012, the airport's name was changed to Václav Havel Airport Prague on the 5th of October of that year, the birthday of the former president of the Czech Republic, Václav Havel.
