Car rental at Malaga Airport - Heart of the Costa del Sol

One of the oldest airports in Spain, Malaga Airport (officially known as the Aeropuerto de Málaga-Costa del Sol) is the fourth-busiest airport in Spain after Madrid, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca. Blessed with with three large terminal buildings - T1, T2 and T3 - it is conveniently located just 8 kilometres from the city centre which means a short 20-minute transfer to and from downtown Malaga. Operating with the IATA code AGP, a large percentage of its traffic originates from the UK (with Gatwick Airport topping the list), followed by Barcelona, Dublin, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Manchester. Currently around fifty major airlines operate at the Malaga Costa del Sol Airport carrying some 25 million passenger movements every year.

One of the jewels of the Mediterranean, Malaga is the beating heart of Eastern Spain's glorious stretch of coastline known as the Costa del Sol, a land of golden sandy beaches, scenic seascapes and cultural richness. As the region's main gateway, the city harmoniously blends all the comforts and conveniences of a modern metropolis with its ancient past, particularly in the well-preserved Alcazabra fortress built in the 11th century. Other tourist highlights include Malaga's magnificent cathedral (in the heart of the Old Town) constructed in the 15th century, the Teatro Romano (dating from the time of Emperor Augustus) and the amazing Picasso Museum set in the famous artist's childhood home.

The city is perfectly placed for travellers looking to explore both the Costa del Sol and the rest of the enchanting Andalusia region. With a car rental from Malaga Airport you enjoy its many attractions before before heading inland to discover some of southern Spain's most popular cities, including Gibraltar and the upmarket seaside resort of Marbella. A particular treat for travellers is the opportunity to head north-west deep into the interior to discover the incredible city of Seville, a city studded with top tourist sights offering a true taste of the real Spain. Described as the quintessential Andalusian city, Seville is one of the country's most alluring places to visit at any time of the year, largely on account of its imposing cathedral and the Alcazar, a building of immense architectural beauty notable for its unique Mudéjar décor and lavish gardens. The history of Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport began on 9 March 1919, when a Salmson 2A plane that was flying over the city looking for a place to land touched down on a plot of land known as “El Rompedizo”. On the 12th of July 1946, the airport was 3,090-metre finally opened to both domestic and international traffic and with the more recent addition of a new 3,090-metre, it is capable of handling some of the biggest wide-body aircraft in operation today. Other key components at Malaga Airport include a parallel taxiway, four rapid exit taxiways and more than 150,000 square metres of aircraft parking with over a hundred available spaces.

    Terminal

Despite officially having three interconnected terminals, only two of them (Terminal 2 and Terminal 3) currently handle any flights and passengers. Opened on the 30th of November 1991, Terminal 2 (T2) has three floors and a basement, the second-floor dedicated to departures and the ground-floor solely catering for arrivals. designed by the American architect Bruce S. Fairbanks, Terminal 3 (T3) was inaugurated on the 15th of March 2010 with the main aim of helping to cater for the increasing numbers of tourists visiting the Costa del Sol. It has almost ninety check-in counters, 20 boarding gates (12 with air-bridges) and 12 baggage-reclaim carousels.

    Airport Facilities

Being a major hub for leisure traffic right through the year, Malaga Airport is fully equipped with an extensive range of on-site facilities and services. Several restaurants, bars, cafés and fast food outlets cater for passengers with enough time to relax and enjoy something to eat, while a number of Duty-free shops cater for travellers looking to buy a diversity of products from wines and spirits to tobacco and jewellery. The airport also has a wide selection of other shops and boutiques selling anything from luggage and sportswear to designer goods and electronic gadgets. Business travellers can take advantage of the VIP lounge open every day from 6am to 11pm. There are children's play areas, foreign exchange counters, cash machines, medical facilities, tour operator desks, multi-denominational worshipping facilities and a police station located inside the main terminal building.

How to get to and from Malaga Airport

If you've booked a car rental at Malaga Airport and you want to travel to the city centre, don't worry it' couldn't be easier! All you need to do is stay on the MA-21 which will get you to the heart of Malaga in in around 15-20 minutes depending on the season and the time of day you are travelling. Still following the MA-21, but in the other direction this time, a 10-minute drive from the airport is Torremolinos and a little further away is Fuengirola about 25 kilometres away by taking the AP-7. Keep heading south-west and you'll arrive at Marbella, which is approximately 50 kilometres (just over an hour's drive) from Malaga Airport on the AP-7. One of the best ways of getting to and from the centre of Malaga city using the city's public transport system is the airport express bus (line 75) which has a journey time of around 15 minutes. The bus stop is on the ground-floor in the arrivals hall and you can buy tickets on-board. Alternatively, the C1 suburban train route (run by the Spanish railway operator RENFE) links the airport with the city centre in less than a quarter of an hour every 20 minutes, with the station entrances found close to both the arrivals and departures halls.

    Parking Tips

Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the car parks at Malaga Airport are easy to access and quite affordable compared with many other international airports around Europe. The are five different options from which to choose - the Long-stay car park, Express parking area, Arrivals car park, General car park and the more exclusive (and expensive VIP parking area. In summer, you might experience some frustration trying to find an on-street parking space in the centre of Malaga due to the fact that it's a very popular tourist destination and is close to many of the Costa del Sol's best beaches. We urge caution because the city has a strict policy of fining and towing illegally-parked vehicles, so before leaving your vehicle is always best to make extra sure that the parking space you have found is fully authorised and you should try to find out about any restrictions that may be in force. Fortunately, there are plenty of car parks in and around the centre and inner city where you can pick up your car rental from Malaga Airport and leave it for a few hours with total peace of mind. The Alcazaba car park, for example, is close to a number of tourist attractions, including the Old Town, the Pablo Picasso Museum and the world-famous Alcazaba itself, or alternatively you can try the car park adjacent to Malaga Train Station.
