Car Rental with Hertz: Everything you need to know

Car Rental with Hertz - Auto Europe

Founded in Chicago by Walter L. Jacobs, Hertz was originally known as Rent-a-Car Inc. The company started off with a modest fleet of twelve T-model Ford cars. Even so, the company only took five years to start expanding its fleet and presence – from its twelve to over six hundred vehicles. Its profits also grew during this time to a million annual turnover. However, the brand Hertz that we know of nowadays only came around once John D. Hertz – owner of Yellow Truck and Coach Manufacturing Company – bought the company in 1993. The company then became known as Hertz Drive-Ur-Self System before it was acquired by the General Motors Corporation.

As the years passed and the popularity of a car rental with Hertz grew, the company expanded quickly into other markets. In 1938 they established themselves in Canada, in 1950 France and in 1961 South America. In 1953, John Hertz decided to purchase the brand he had sold from General Motors and established the Hertz Corporation. In 1954 the company floated on the New York Stock Market, and its headquarters changed to Park Range, New Jersey in 1988. The following years saw the company change ownership various times, with its fleet also increasing significantly and its presence globally.

In late 2006, Hertz Global Holdings was acquired by Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, who expanded Hertz presence into Europe. During the same period, the new owners also bought the Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group – substantially increasing the company’s fleet and offices. The following year, Hertz launched its sister brand Wheelz – which primarily catered to low-cost rentals. In 2009 Wheelz changed its name to Advantage Rent-a-Car.

Headquartered in Estero, Florida, USA, the company was founded more than 100 years ago in 1918. It employees around 40,000 workers worldwide, with a presence in over 150 countries.

    A unique experience with Hertz

One of the key attractions of Hertz is its sheer fleet size offering. With some of the latest vehicles around, and with a promise that no vehicle is older than six months – you can see why many customers opt for Hertz. The company also has a large selection of top car brands such as Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, Toyota, Jeep and many more. Another great advantage to choosing a car rental with Hertz is its commitment to providing environmentally friendly vehicles. The Green Collection was launched in September 2006 and includes the Toyota Prius, the Ford Fusion and many more.

Along with traditional car rentals, the company also offers a low-cost one-way car rental, known as Hertz One – which is significantly cheaper than traditional one-way car rentals. Hertz Premium is another sought-after option. This allows customers to hire the most modern, up-to-date vehicles at a reduced cost. Hertz On Demand was created in 2008 as a car sharing initiative – with primary focus in cities and universities. Lastly, the Dream Collection or British Collection has also helped the company differentiate itself from its competitors.
