Car hire at Copenhagen Airport - Visiting the Heart of Denmark

Copenhagen Airport (CPH) is the main international airport serving the Danish capital as well as the regions of Zealand and Øresund, along with a large part of the south of Sweden. It is one of the oldest airports in Europe and is situated on the island of Amager. Known locally as Kastrup, it is located just 8 kilometres south of the city centre and 24 kilometres west of Malmö via the iconic Øresund Bridge. Founded in 1925, it handles 60,000 passenger movements every day, thus making it the busiest airport in Scandinavia and one of the most popular in the whole of Europe.

Copenhagen is a relaxed, homely place whose warmth and laid-back appeal has been attracting a growing number of international visitors in recent years. A unique blend of Europe and Scandinavia, it also prides itself on being a city of fabulous food markets, fascinating museums and fun-filled family attractions, most notably Tivoli Gardens, a vintage fairground that inspired Walt Disney to create his own theme park in the 1950s. The long list of other don't-miss sights in Copenhagen includes the amazing Den Bla Planet oceanarium and Bakken, the world's oldest amusement park.

Visitors opting to book an affordable car rental in Copenhagen can explore this magnificent city in total comfort and at their own pace before touring the local area where many more interesting places are waiting to be discovered. A few kilometres to the north of Danish capital lies Kronborg Castle (classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000), which Shakespeare called Elsinore as the home of his fictional character Hamlet. The amazing Viking Ship Museum (a short drive to the west) is another unique attraction close to the city where visitors can marvel at the sight of five vessels fully restored from the Viking era.

Auto Europe is a market-leading company that operates in the heart of the international car rental sector. Airport Information

Located in the district of Kastrup on the island of Amager (just 8 km south of the Danish capital and 24 km west of Malmo), Copenhagen Airport is the busiest airport in Denmark and the largest in Scandinavia as a whole. It is also recognised as one of neighbouring Sweden's main airports due to its proximity to the southern part of the country. One of the first civil airports in the world when it first opened in 1925, today it serves around 30 million passengers annually and is one of three main hubs used by Scandinavian Airlines as well as a key operating base for Sunclass Airlines and Norwegian Air Shuttle. Almost all major European carriers have a connection to Copenhagen from their main hubs and has been seeing increased traffic from low-fare carriers since the launch of the dedicated CPH Go section.

Where to pick up a car rental at Copenhagen Airport

Although there used to be three terminals at the airport and the rental companies were located in terminals 1 and 3, nowadays if you want to rent a car at Copenhagen airport, you just have to go to the Car Rental Centre now located between terminals 2 and 3. This is where the majority of the airport's vehicle suppliers are situated with most operating from 7am until 11pm, although some companies may have alternative opening hours. To reach the Car Rental Centre you can either walk (if you only have hand-luggage) or take the free shuttle bus departing from Terminals 2 and 3. When you enter the Arrivals Hall from the baggage-claim area, just go straight ahead to find the bus stop at the end of the building.

    Terminals

Prior to the extensive refurbishment and renovation work carried out in 2015, Copenhagen Airport had three terminals with Terminal 1 being used for domestic flights and Terminals 2 and 3 mostly serving international departure and arrivals. The restructuring of the old Terminal 1 (which now functions as an administrative area) saw its facilities distributed across the other two terminals. Today, Terminals 2 and 3 are inter-connected with the ground-floor now home to many of the airport's shops and restaurants with Level 1 operating as the main check-in and security area. After passing through security, passengers enter a large communal area where the boarding gates are situated, all of which are less than 10 minutes' walk from each other. The busy CPH Go area (generally regarded as the low-cost airline terminal) is inside Terminal 3.

    Airport Facilities

Due to its vast array of on-site passenger amenities, CPH is widely considered to be one of the best airports in Europe. The long list of airport services includes the regular airport facilities such as large Duty-free shops, fashion boutiques, cafés, bars, fast-food outlets (including Burger King and McDonald's) and several upmarket sit-down restaurants. Copenhagen Airport is equipped with several lounge areas (including the popular Aspire and Aviator lounges) equipped with free Wi-Fi, computers and charging points for mobile devices. In addition to the lounge areas, the airport has several currency exchange points, banks, tourist information services, lost property and luggage-protection services. There are also a number of specific services available for people with disabilities, and the entire airport has been designed to cater for passengers of reduced mobility.

How to get to and from Copenhagen Airport

Once you have collected your car rental at Copenhagen Airport, you can use it to get around the city or to visit all the interesting places in close proximity to the Danish capital. Due to the good quality of the country's roads and the closeness of the airport to the city centre, driving around Copenhagen isn't a difficult task because all the roads are well signposted with routes properly indicated along the way. When heading to the airport, simply follow the signs for Kobenhavns Lufthavne. With Terminal 3 providing direct access to the airport's Metro and overground train services, with the Metro running every 4–6 minutes during the day and every 15–20 minutes at night (it takes 15 minutes from Copenhagen Central Station to the airport). There are several buses running between Copenhagen city centre and Copenhagen Airport with bus-stops outside the main Arrivals Hall, while several other bus companies have routes from the airport to other parts of Denmark and Sweden. Trains also run to and from the airport and tickets can be purchased at the DSB ticket office in Terminal 3. If you prefer to travel by taxi, there is a rank right in front of Terminal 3 which operates whenever there are arrivals and departures at CPH.

    Parking Tips

When visiting Copenhagen, please pay attention to the parking zones and try to avoid parking in the red zones if you are on a tight budget because they are the most expensive! Don't forget that the closer you get to the city centre, the more expensive parking is (both on the street and in the car parks) and if there are any free spaces, the chances are they will have a time limit. Parking is free on Sundays and public holidays, other than that you should expect to pay from 8am on Mondays until 5pm on Saturdays. There is also the option of parking for free on the outskirts of the city and travelling to the centre by public transport. BLOX Parking at Vester Voldgade 129 is 24/7 and located in the heart of the city, just a 5-minute walk from City Hall, Tivoli Gardens and Strøget, the city's main precinct. Q-Park Vesterport at Nyropsgade 43 is another popular choice within easy walking distance of many of Copenhagen's top tourist attractions.

There are several car parks where you can park your car hire at Copenhagen Airport, with a total of almost 10,000 spaces available. Generaly speaking, the closer you want to park to the terminals, the more expensive it is. The Budget (the name of the car park, not the car rental company!) car park is the cheapest option and is located about 5 minutes from the main terminal building. The Standard and Standard+ car parks are the closest to the terminals but charge a higher price. The most expensive option is the Direct car park which has a direct connection to the terminals. It's better to pre-book if possible because it not only guarantees that you will have a space available, but also allows you to choose the car park that best suits you. Once you have parked your car, you can use the free terminal buses at the airport. At Copenhagen Airport you can charge your electric vehicle - travelling or not. And it doesn't require a membership to use our charging stations.
