The third-busiest international airport in Italy (after Rome's Fiumicino and Milan's Malpensa), Bergamo Airport is conveniently located just 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) south-east of Bergamo and 45 kilometres (28 miles) north-east of Milan. It is one of Europe's fastest-growing air transportation hubs catering for more than 17 million passenger movements to and from 130 popular destinations in over 35 different countries.
Bergamo is an ancient fortified town set on a hilltop not far from Milan in the heart of northern Italy. Considered by many to be a fascinating open-air museum, it has numerous art galleries and a wide range of interesting architecture to fascinate its many visitors throughout the year. Surrounded by mountains and dozens of old stone villages, it nestles idyllically in the foothills of the Orobie Alps in a landscape ideal for people looking to slow down, step back in time and immerse themselves in this unique part of the lovely Lombardy region.
Bergamo is in close proximity to many key destinations in northern Italy, thus offering visitors the best of both worlds on the same trip, mixing Bergamo (an oasis of tranquillity with many delightful Baroque and Renaissance-era buildings) and Milan, one of the world's great cultural cities with some of the best shopping districts in the whole of Europe. Book your car rental at Bergamo Airport with Auto Europe today and enjoy a few days' rest, relaxation, fine-dining and driving around Italy’s picturesque Lombardy region.
Bergamo's Old Town, the Città Alta, is its beating heart crowned by its 12th-century church with a striking belltower dominating the skyline at more than fifty metres in height. Visitors are invited to climb to the top to enjoy some of the most breathtaking views stretching far into the distance. Most newcomers begin their city tour in Piazza Vecchia, a well-preserved medieval square that's very much the centrepiece of Bergamo's old quarter. The Venetians built the city walls (many of which are still standing today) when they ruled the city for over four hundred years in total.
Visiting Bergamo and nearby Milan couldn't be easier with your own transport, as well as many of the other star attractions in the Lombardy region. Just go to the Auto Europe website and book your car in a few quick and easy steps.

Well designed with the passenger in mind, Bergamo Airport has one large terminal building with dozens of check-in desks and boarding gates. It is divided into two main zones comprising Zone A with gates A1-A15 and Zone B where gates B1-B5 are located. Spanning approximately 36,000 square-metres across two floors, BGY's impressive terminal handles all the traffic coming through the airport and is equipped with numerous shops, restaurants and associated passenger services, as well as a range of efficient transport options to the city centre of both Bergamo and Milan and beyond.
Built in 1970 and continuously expanding since the 1980s, BGY's main terminal building has over the years developed a full range of on-site passenger facilities, with most of the shops operating from 6am to 10pm every day and eateries generally being open daily from 5am to 10pm, with some restaurants and fast-food outlets staying open later. The airport also has two VIP lounges as well as optional 24/7 fast-track services offering passengers the chance to avoid long queues for security checks. Bergamo Airport features dozens of shops and boutiques offering a wide range of products including electrical appliances, leather goods, sunglasses, watches, tobacco, perfume and souvenirs. There's also a chemist, first-aid booth, several banks and bureaux de change, a chapel, left-luggage offices, tourist information centre and free Wi-fi throughout the building. Passengers looking to spend the night at the airport just need to walk a few hundred metres to find the NH Hotel Orio al Serio, a comfortable four-star establishment overlooking the terminal.
Travellers planning to pick up their car rental at Bergamo Airport will find BGY's close proximity to Bergamo and Milan of great benefit, with the former located a short drive away on the SP591 and the latter less than an hour's drive on the E64. Considered by many to be one of the main gateways to Lombardy and the rest of northern Italy. Bergamo Airport is also easily accessible using the local public transport system and although the airport doesn't have a train station, you can take the ATB airport bus route 1 to Stazione Marconi per Città Alta in the heart of Bergamo in about 15 minutes, and trains run from Bergamo Train Station to Milan every 30 minutes. There are several other transport connections to and from Bergamo city centre, as well as a number of other destinations such as Arezzo, Bologna, Brescia, Monza, Turin, Malpensa Airport, Milan Trade Exhibition Centre, Parma and Verona.
BGY offers drivers a quick and very convenient solution for parking their car hire at Bergamo Airport with approximately 8,000 spaces available in three areas around the airport, with prices depending on the chosen car park and length of stay. Please note that a free shuttle bus service (running every 30 minutes 24/7) connects with car park P3 as it is the furthest away from the terminal building. Bergamo itself also has plenty of parking options although it's important to remember that the city operates an LTZ (Limited Traffic Zone) system in which the access of many vehicles is restricted. Nevertheless, the city has several goo options close to the centre, such as the large car park located near the lower funicular station and Città Bassa, namely Parcheggio Piazza Libertà and Parcheggio Predaparking. Additionally, there are incentive parking areas along the main access routes to the city that offer free parking with bus and tram connections to the city center.
