    Terminal

Inaugurated in the early 20th-century, Amsterdam Airport today is a modern, stylish facility that ranks very highly amongst the top European airports, including London's Heathrow, Paris' Charles de Gaulle and the more recently-opened Istanbul Airport. It is quite unique in that it has just one large terminal building split into three main zones that meet in the large concourse known as the Plaza, thus saving passengers time because there is no need to use internal shuttle services between terminals, as is the case elsewhere. There are numerous conveyor belts to help travellers get to where they want to go in all the different areas of the airport. Here, you'll find four arrival areas around the Plaza.

Passengers need to pay attention to the colour of the signs, such as the yellow signs with black text which indicate the different departure and arrival areas, including directions to the train, bus, taxi ranks and car parks. The dark grey signs with yellow text show the way to the luggage lockers, tourist information desks, toilets and the car rental counters at Amsterdam Airport. There are also blue signs with white text pointing the way to various stores in the Schiphol Plaza, as well as the two departure areas on the floor above the Plaza, that are connected to each other and equipped with counters and check-in machines. There are also check-in machines in this area which is also links the rental companies' car park with the main terminal. Make sure you check your flight details on the departure screens, as you will be directed to the departure point closest to your gate.

    Airport Facilities

At Amsterdam Airport you'll find a wide variety of stores, restaurants and wellness facilities that can make your waiting time pleasant and relaxing. There's plenty of choice for hungry passengers who will find numerous restaurants available, including some operating with the most modern and health-conscious concepts with the freshest ingredients. You can also opt for established a la carte restaurants or you can try a glass of pikketanissie (a typical Dutch drink) in a traditional café. The airport has plenty of interesting and very innovative features, such as the world's first airport library where travellers can relax in a quiet environment, read books, listen to music and learn more about Dutch culture. You might prefer to relax in the airport spa or one of the other wellness centres dotted around the airport, or pay a visit to one of the on-site casinos to try your luck and enjoy a bit of entertainment before take-off.

Passengers are also welcome to visit the Panorama Terrace where they can admire the Fokker 100, the largest plane ever produced by the world's most famous Dutch aircraft factory. The plane has been restructured and transformed into an attraction suitable for all ages. In addition to the Panorama Terrace, which is the perfect spot for aviation enthusiasts, you will also find a space of silence and devotion suitable for all those looking for a little peace and quiet. Frequent flyers can take advantage of the Privium programme which is a unique facility specially designed for Amsterdam Airport.

How to get to and from Amsterdam Airport

Getting around with your car rental at Amsterdam Airport is a simple process because the city is only a 20-minute drive from the pick-up point. Easily be reached by car via the A4 and A9 motorways, Schipol is also perfectly positioned for people looking to visit some of the other interesting Dutch cities such as Eindhoven and Leeuwarden. Trains and buses are also good options for getting to and from the airport with the former departing from platforms 1, 2 and 3 on the lower level of the terminal. The bus station is located right outside the main entrance with regular services directly to both the city centre and Amsterdam's Central Train Station.

    Parking Tips

Finding a parking space at the airport is relatively easy compared with many other large cities, with Schiphol Parking being the official provider of the many short- and long-term car parks, with P1 being a short walk away and P3 providing the best long-stay facilities. Most visitors find it easy to drive around the city centre which is compact and simple to navigate in a rental car, although finding a parking space on weekdays can sometimes be a challenge. It is therefore advisable to park your car on the outskirts of the city, with some of the outlying car parks located close to the motorways for better access. This is an option that is not only much cheaper but is also more convenient for travellers visiting the city, because these Park & Ride car parks are mostly situated on the A10 ring road with excellent connections to Amsterdam's famously efficient public transport.
